In the fast-paced and often chaotic world we live in, finding a sense of purpose and balance is crucial for our well-being. One timeless practice that offers guidance and structure for intentional living is the Rule of Life, a concept deeply rooted in Christian spirituality. One of the most influential figures associated with a Rule of Life is St. Benedict, whose wisdom has resonated through centuries, providing a blueprint for those seeking a more intentional and fulfilling way of life.
Understanding the Rule of Life: A Blueprint for Intentional Living
The Latin word for "Rule" is "Regula." In Greek, the equivalent term is "Kanon" (κανών). Both "Regula" and "Kanon" convey the idea of a standard, guide, or principle to follow. The word Regula could also be used to refer to a trellis or a sturdy piece of material to support vines to provide structure and guidance for the plants as they grow. A Rule of Life is a set of intentional practices and commitments that individuals adopt to guide their daily living. It serves as a framework for making decisions, setting priorities, and fostering personal and spiritual growth. While various religious traditions have their own rules, the Rule of St. Benedict stands out as a timeless example that has inspired countless individuals seeking a deeper connection with God and a more purposeful existence.
St. Benedict and the Rule of Saint Benedict

St. Benedict of Nursia, a 6th-century Christian monk, authored the "Rule of Saint Benedict," a foundational document for Western monasticism. Born out of Benedict's desire to create a balanced and disciplined community life, the Rule provides practical guidance for monks in areas such as prayer, work, study, and communal living.
One key principle of the Rule of St. Benedict is the emphasis on ora et labora, Latin for "pray and work." This balanced approach encourages a holistic integration of spiritual practices and daily responsibilities, fostering a life where the sacred and the secular coexist harmoniously.
Adopting a Rule of Life: Lessons from St. Benedict for Followers of Christ
While not everyone may be called to a monastic lifestyle, the principles of the Rule of St. Benedict can be adapted by followers of Christ seeking a more intentional and purpose-driven life. They are not boxes to be checked off. They are instead a way of life, how we show up to our life with our eyes on Christ as we follow him. As Dallas Willard once said "God is not opposed to effort. He's opposed to earning. We are doing nothing to earn Gods attention. we already have it. With a Rule of Life we are simply participating in our sanctification and the work God is already doing in us. Here are some key lessons and examples but your own rule go much farther than this:
Balancing Prayer and Action: Just as St. Benedict emphasized the balance of prayer and work, modern individuals can integrate intentional prayer and reflection into their daily routines. This can be as simple as starting and ending each day with moments of silence, offering a space for communion with the divine.
Prioritizing Community and Relationships: St. Benedict's Rule places a strong emphasis on communal living. For contemporary Christians, this can translate into fostering healthy relationships, participating in community activities, and practicing hospitality and kindness.
Embracing Simplicity: St. Benedict valued simplicity and humility. In our consumer-driven society, adopting a simpler lifestyle can lead to a greater focus on what truly matters, reducing distractions and creating space for spiritual growth.
Committing to Regular Self-Examination: The Rule of St. Benedict encourages regular self-examination. Followers of Christ can adopt practices such as the Ignatian Examen, a reflective prayer method, to review their day, express gratitude, seek forgiveness, and set resolutions for growth.
Crafting Your Personal Rule of Life
Creating a personal Rule of Life involves reflection, discernment, and a commitment to intentional living. Consider your values, priorities, and the areas of your life that need attention. Identify specific practices that align with your faith and contribute to your spiritual well-being.
In a world filled with constant demands and distractions, the Rule of Life provides a counter-cultural invitation to slow down, reflect, and live with purpose. As we draw inspiration from the wisdom of St. Benedict, may we find the courage to craft intentional lives that reflect the love and grace of Christ in our actions, relationships, and daily pursuits.
I have my own Rule of Life and I've loved developing it and endeavoring to live by it. Do I do it perfectly ? NO! It's rare that I ever "knock it out of the park". That said, it helps guide my life, build healthy habits and helps me to focus less on myself and assists me in taking a posture toward God that is turned toward him in attention and not just some loos way of living my life where I'm just blow around like a boat with no sail on the sea. Below I've inserted a template for a rule of life that might be helpful as well as a few resources that you might find helpful.
